Do It Yourself Garage Floor

Q: Can I coat my garage floor myself?

A: Yes, of course you can. There are kits you can buy from your local hardware store to coat your garage floor yourself.

They cost approximately $100 - $150 each.

Q: How long will a DIY kit last?

A: You should expect about a 1 year before it starts peeling. Here are some pics of the typical 1 year performance:

Q: Should I coat my own garage floor or should I hire Carolina Polishing to do it?

A: You should hire Carolina Polishing to coat it for several reasons. I will list them in the next answer.

Q: What is the difference between doing it myself and hiring a professional?

A: 1. If you purchase the kits from the hardware store you will save yourself some money up front. However, you will be purchasing a headache to come. Most kits provide an acid wash to etch the concrete so the epoxy will stick. This prep is not enough to do the job properly. So within a year or so your epoxy floor will start coming up in spots and patches. Carolina Polishing uses a diamond grinder to do the prep work.

     2. The epoxy system we use is industrial grade. It is not something that is accessible to the homeowner. We use a four coat system: Primer, Base Coat, Chips and a clear Top Coat. The kits don't have all of that.

     3. The kits come with usually less than a pound of chips. This gives a sparse chip look and is decorative only. Carolina Polishing uses between 50 to 100 pounds of chips per garage. We broadcast the chips to full coverage. We think this looks better than the sparse chip look simply because it is very even and looks more like a granite floor.

     4. Carolina Polishing also fixes and repairs bad areas of concrete and cracks before coating your floor. As a home owner you will have a difficult time with this part of prep without the right tooling, the right patching compounds and experience with repairs.

     5. We guarantee our floor for a number of years. They will not delaminate due to the normal use of a garage. The kits you buy come with no such warranty. Their warranty is that they will replace the product, not give you your money back and no one will come to fix your floor.

Q: Why should I spend that much more money with Carolina Polishing rather than save money and do it myself?

A: Yes, it does cost more to have a professional come and coat your floor, but the alternative is really going to be you doing it once and then again in a year or so and then again in another year and so on. Adding paint on top of paint doesn't fix anything. The same problems occur. By hiring Carolina Polishing you can have it done once and it will stay like it should - guaranteed! No need to move all of your stuff out of the garage again to do another round of painting.

Remember - The only thing more expensive than hiring a professional is hiring an amateur!
